Yuuki Ashikaga (足利 勇気 Ashikaga Yuuki) is the main protagonist of Cross Days. He attends the same school as the rest of the main cast, and works in the library.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Yuuki is a short boy with pale brown hair and reddish-brown eyes. He appears to be slightly feminine, which lends into his ability to cross-dress as "Yuu".
As "Yuu", he wears a ginger wig, and dresses up as a waitress. He also wears a white sundress and the girls' school uniform.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Although polite and somewhat reserved, Yuuki is determined and honest; this is seen when he tries to keep Makoto and Kotonoha together. However, most of his plans don't go well, and are affected by how the player plays his/her cards.
Initially, he is hostile towards Makoto and Sekai for ignoring Kotonoha. However, depending on player choice, Yuuki could end up in a relationship with Makoto while guised in his crossdressing persona, "Yuu", as well as develop his own feelings for Makoto. However, if Yuuki doesn't use his Yuu persona and instead confronts Makoto directly, he'll be able to blossom in his relationship with Roka Kitsuregawa instead and, depending on the path taken, help Kotonoha succeed with her love life as well. Yuuki may also have to confront Ai Yamagata and may go on to become involved with her.
In the visual novel, he is seen to have a short temper, best seen when he threatens Makoto with breaking his teeth during the festival after the latter provokes his jealousy regarding Roka. He is also seen to take offense at references to shortness, be it his own or anyone else's. This is best seen every time he punches Taisuke for making fun of his or anyone else's shortness.
In the manga, Yuuki is shown to be more self-conscious, as seen in his outburst at Roka when she teases him about his "unmanly" appearance. He is also more sensitive, as shown when he attempts suicide after Kotonoha coldly rejects his attempts at helping her.
Role[edit | edit source]
Visual Novel[edit | edit source]
Yuuki, as stated above, works in the library. He develops a crush on Kotonoha Katsura, who often comes by to read. He asks her whether or not it's true that she's going out with Makoto Itou, which she confirms herself. Yuuki later discovers Makoto cheating on her with her friend, Sekai Saionji, and decides to help Kotonoha with her relationship with Makoto. However, many of Yuuki's schemes don't go as planned, partially due to his relationship with Roka Kitsuregawa.
Roka and Yuuki have several endings where they end up romantically together as a couple. In Ai's endings, Ai ends up becoming pregnant by Yuuki and in the "Only Love and Courage" ending, they could end up moving in together. In Makoto's ending ("Only You"), Yuuki's true identity is revealed, but Makoto confesses that he is in love with him regardless. They become a couple, but it's implied that they keep it a secret from their schoolmates. This could be in order to not upset Kotonoha or so they will not become a target of homophobic bullying. If Yuuki doesn't end up with Roka, Ai, or Makoto, and does not get killed, he may be introduced to Kokoro Katsura by Kasannoin ("Disappointment").
In Yuuki's bad endings, he can become a sex slave to Ion and Youka ("Massive Love") or to Taisuke, Toyama, and Matsudaira ("Licentious Beast"), becoming trapped in the latter situation when they threaten to reveal his "Yuu" persona at school. In the "Self-Destruction" ending, Kotonoha tracks down "Yuu" and kills "her" with a crowbar. In the "Elder Sister" ending, Kotonoha instead mistakes Yuuki's sister, Chie, as Makoto's secret lover. Chie figures out that Yuuki is "Yuu" and in order to protect her brother, confirms to Kotonoha that she is the one having a sexual relationship with Makoto. She is then implied to be violently killed by Kotonoha.
Manga[edit | edit source]
After a rough start, Yuuki starts developing feelings for Roka and mistakes her for dating Makoto. He becomes further involved after finding out that Makoto is cheating on Kotonoha (and presumably Roka) with Sekai. Yuuki also has a crush on Kotonoha and wants to protect her from harm. He tries to confront Makoto and Sekai, but Sekai simply tells him it's none of his business and Makoto later mocks Yuuki for his efforts, even going so far as admitting to Yuuki that he doesn't care about either Kotonoha or Sekai, but likes the sex. He then tells Yuuki that if a much better-looking girl comes along, he would dump Kotonoha and Sekai both. This gives Yuuki the idea that in order to make Kotonoha see what kind of a person Makoto really is, he'll have to show Kotonoha how Makoto behaves with other girls, causing Yuuki to create his "Yuu" persona.
Makoto becomes quickly interested in "Yuu" to the point of coldly ignoring Kotonoha and forcing himself on Yuu. Yuu responds by pushing or punching Makoto away in anger when the latter doesn't keep his hands to himself, but this only motivates Makoto more to chase Yuu. Later on, Makoto attempts to have Roka for himself too and tries to rape her when she rejects him. Yuuki saves Roka but his true identity is exposed. Makoto reacts with anger and disgust, mocks Yuuki, and walks away. Roka thanks Yuuki for saving her from the situation. Yuuki decides to be upfront with his actions and leads Kotonoha to the library's storage room where Makoto and Sekai are making out. To Yuuki's surprise, Kotonoha doesn't seem to be bothered by it at all and Makoto reveals that they are in a three-way relationship and that both girls are okay with sharing him. Yuuki later meets with Kotonoha to explain himself but Kotonoha reacts coldly, believing that Yuuki wanted to steal Makoto away from her by using his Yuu persona and threatens him to stay away from Makoto. Despite being disillusioned by Kotonoha's true colors, Yuuki decides to move on and falls for Roka.
