History[]
Background[]
Kei is the son of Mrs. Ogata and Tomaru Sawagoe. Early in his childhood, his mother left Tomaru, leaving Kei vulnerable to horrific abuse at the hands of his father. Eventually, social services took Kei away from Tomaru and placed him with his mother, who had since married Mr. Ogata and had another child with him.
PureMail[]
Visual Novel[]
As A,W, Kei has been chatting online with EVE, who he now suspects to be Midori Nagawa, a classmate he has a crush on. His suspicions are confirmed when EVE sends A,W a series of photos Kei himself had taken of Midori. From there, depending on player choice, Kei will either remain fixated on Midori or become attracted to other girls.
OVA[]
In the midst of his struggles with his alter ego, his childhood trauma, and his being blackmailed into being Yumi's sex slave, Kei is invited to go to the summer festival with both Midori and her best friend, Miki, only for Midori to cancel at the last minute due to a "family emergency." After Miki takes him to a secluded location, Kei allows his lust to get the better of him and rapes her.
A few days later, after apologizing to Miki, Kei learns about Midori's own troubled past, and Miki promises to forgive him if he helps Midori. Eventually, Kei learns that due to Midori's parents' divorce, she will be moving away after summer vacation, and as A,W, he tries to convince her to keep her distance from him. After Miki gets wind of this, Kei comes clean to her about A,W and decides to keep up the charade for Midori, only for Miki to call him out on his cowardice. This motivates Kei to stand up to Yumi, as well as to invite Midori to his house for a study session, which eventually becomes more intimate. That evening, after realizing that Midori has shared fewer intimate details with A,W, Kei decides that A,W is no longer needed between them.
PureMail After[]
In one particular scene, Kei confesses to his best friend Shin'ichi that he'd raped Miki's younger brother Taisuke, having mistaken him for her.
It is also mentioned that Kei had fathered Korin Sekihata via Rin Sekihata. When Rin and Korin reunited with him, Kei molested the latter, causing Rin to end their relationship.[1]
Character[]
Appearance[]
Kei is a lean young man with short coppery brown hair, the bangs of which are long enough to cover his eyes, though his eyes are seen to be gray in the OVA. In Miki's route, she finds an old album with Kei's pictures along with those of his biological father, Tomaru, and mentions that Kei greatly resembles his father.
Kei's casual clothing consists of an orange social shirt (or a light blue shirt in the good endings) and blue jeans. He also wears a middle school uniform consisting of a white social shirt and dark blue jeans.
Personality[]
Kei is a deeply troubled young man with psychological (and in the OVA, physical) scars due to the abuse he endured at the hands of his father, which included beatings and forcing Kei to watch him have sex. Viewing his father as a beast whose genes he carried, Kei constantly struggled between giving in to similar impulses and trying to remain a decent human being despite his childhood trauma.
From PureMail After and the Days series, it can be canonically inferred that Kei lost that struggle and continued his father's wicked ways.
Hobbies[]
Kei is experienced with computers and prefers using chatrooms over conversing in person.
Etymology[]
- His given name Kei (圭) means "jade tablet".
- His surname may originate from the Ogata clan.
Trivia[]
- Kei addresses himself with "boku" [僕]. This distinguishes him from his other protagonist half-brothers, who all refer to themselves using "ore" [俺], as well as their protagonist half-sisters, who use "watashi" [私].
- Kei shares this trait with Yuuki Ashikaga, the protagonist of Cross Days.
- According to the official family tree, Kei also has a child with Miki, but the official continuity is still unknown.
